Communications Department
On May 10th, the Perry 6th Grade Academy Drama Club performed the play Yearbook by Steven Fendrich. As students looked through their yearbook, they reminisced about the school year and what they had learned about their classmates and the misconceptions of stereotypes. The Drama Club is lead by Mrs. Melanie Lang, Language Arts and social studies teacher at PMA. Students, teachers, and parents helped design and build all of the sets. 

During the 4th nine weeks of school Southport Academy Art students recreated Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” using plastic bottle caps. Students from the Academy began collecting bottle caps at lunch time before winter break. What an awesome way to showcase one of the artists that the classes studied and save the earth at the same time.
Students at Douglas MacArthur joined together in their outdoor lab on Friday, April 27 to celebrate Arbor Day. As part of the annual celebration, student council members wrote and recited poems about the importance of trees. Students also enjoyed the presentation of a new tree that will be planted on the DM grounds. 

Southport Middle School and Southport Academy will present Casey At The Bat on March 23 and 24. Times are Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Cost is $5 per ticket.
Last week Perry Academy held penny wars to raise money for Clark County school’s tornado relief. Each team was challenged to bring in pennies for their team, however other teams could put silver or paper money in to subtract from daily penny totals. Student Ambassadors helped count money every day. After a week, the total amount raised towards the township’s efforts was $970.00.

On March 14, 2012 from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Southport 6th Grade Academy will host “Sample Southport Academy”. This is an opportunity for the parents of current 4th and 5th grade students to visit and see what the Academy has to offer it’s students. This evening will provide parents with the opportunity to learn more about the curriculum and extra-curricular activities offered to 6th grade students. We hope you can join us. The JG-E 5th grade Caravan actors celebrated Black History Month with the performance of “The Bill Pickett Story.” Bill Pickett was known in many circles as “The Greatest Cowboy Ever” because of his ability to train wild horses and cattle. He was also a great rodeo star. The actors performed this for all students at JGE, as well as students at Mary Bryan Elementary School.
Students at Perry 6th Grade Academy have been participating in a spirit week to get excited about ISTEP next week. The ISTEP spirit week gave kids the opportunity to dress up while reminding them of important test-taking strategies. On Monday kids were reminded to get a good night’s sleep before testing by wearing pajamas to school. Thursday was a “dress for success” day.

Southport 6th Grade Academy students, Ashtyn Henry and Tabatha Koetter, were honored by Greenwood VFW Post 5864 at theirCommunity Awards Program on February 28, 2012. The students’ essays to the theme “Are You Proud of Your Country?” placed in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen writing contest, receiving cash prizes along with both district and local recognition.

On Monday February 27, Mr. Mojo (Travis Brown) visited Southport 6th Grade Academy. Mr. Mojo promotes “NO BULLYING”. He wrapped up SA’s month long campaign to “Do the Right Thing”. He emphasized being the best person you can be all of the time to all of people. As he puts it “MOJO UP”!!!!
