Citrus Fruit Sale to benefit PMMS Bands

Once again the PMMS Music Department is selling Florida Indian River Groves citrus fruit to be delivered in time for the holidays!

Many of our supporters remembered a number of years ago that Perry Meridian High School sponsored such a sale that became an annual event.  Now Perry Meridian Middle School Music Department is continuing this delicious tradition.  Make sure you see your band student for the order forms.  Please contact either Mr. Slightom or Mr. Wilson via e-mail if you need more information.  The Concert Band members and Jazz Band members are using the profits from this sale to help defray the costs of the trip in April to the Smoky Mountain Music Festival.  The Blue and Silver Varsity Bands are focusing their fund raising efforts to supplement the funds used to purchase new instruments, music and band equipment.

Please be generous and support our fine band students in this fund raising effort.

Here are some helpful links to information. Make sure to choose your student’s correct band as the flyers are different for each group.

Oct 012014

On February 7, 2015, Perry Meridian Middle School music department will once again host the Indiana State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble contest.  This is an area wide competition with soloists and ensembles coming from around the central Indiana area to converge on PMA with over 1500 musicians competing for gold medals.  Judges from surrounding colleges and top music programs will serve as judges.

Students will need to begin thinking about how they wish to perform, either as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble, say a trio or quartet.  Mr. Wilson and I will be working with students as we move into the 2nd 9 weeks, as the deadline is the first week of December.  For those students who study privately, their instructors will be working with them to choose just the right solo for perform.

As parents, you are needed as well.  As I said, we host this competition and many parent volunteers are needed to serve as judge’s assistants, doorkeepers and office workers.  Please consider helping as this is an important fund raiser for the music department.  Here’s an informational flyer about the competition.

Exciting news parents, family and friends of the PMMS Music Department!

Our school board has approved the trip request to participate in the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, TN April 23-25.

There will be an informational meeting for all parents and students who are interested in participating in the optional trip.

Here is the website for the festival:  Smoky Mountain Music Festival

The meeting will be Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 pm in the PMMS cafeteria.  If a student is interested in going, he or she MUST be at this meeting with at least one parent.

We are arranging fund raising opportunities so that students will be able to raise some to all of the costs for the trip.

The directors are very excited about the great musical opportunity.  We have competed in the past and look forward to another excellent outcome.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  See you October 7 at 6:30 pm!!

How to practice??

Sep 022014

Playing a band instrument is a wonderful thing!! But for most students, it is totally different than anything else they do!

There are no “red squiggles” under the wrong notes or rhythms, you don’t just play it with your thumbs, and you don’t win a magic scepter or bag of gold for advancing.  You do become a better player and playing becomes easier but you must KNOW HOW TO PRACTICE!!!

With that in mind, we are passing out the following information in all the bands and going over it today and tomorrow.  The 7/8 bands will receive their information on Wednesday and the 6th grade students will hear about it today.

Here are the information sheets they will receive:

6th grade: How Can I Practice in 6th grade Band

7th/8th grade:  How to Practice Flowchart 1

I wanted you to have it so you can go over it with your student.  No matter how good (or bad  😥 ) they think they are doing, they can always be better at practicing.

Please go over this sheet with them so that you will be able to reinforce what we do each day in class.  They need to practice EVERY DAY!!!  It must be a repetitive process that they do each and every day.  A day off is a day lost!!

Thanks again for all you do to support your child in this amazing adventure of band!

Come along on the adventure of a lifetime!

Mr. S.
